EMINDIA2017 Begins with a Bang of “Quality” !

EMINDIA2017 The National Conference of Emergency Medicine, kick started with the inaugural session on “Quality Improvement for Leaders in Emergency Medicine in India” on 12th July 2017.

Held at K L Wig center for Continued Medical Education & Technology, AIIMS, New Delhi, the workshop was first of its kind in India, aiming to introduce and educate the leaders of EM regarding core concepts of Quality Improvement (QI). It had a participation of enthusiastic EM physicians, administrators and ED nurses from various institutes across India.

The sessions were chaired& moderated by Dr. A.K Deorari (Professor, Department of Neonatology, AIIMS, New Delhi and leader in QI in Healthcare in Asia, SEARO region, and Dr. Praveen Aggarwal, (Professor & Head, Department of Emergency Medicine, AIIMS, New Delh and Dean, ACEE-India). The QI coaches of AIIMS, Dr Akshay Kumar (Assistant Prof, Department of Emergency Medicine), Dr Seema Singhal & Dr Aparna Sharma (Assistant Prof, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology) introduced the core concepts of quality improvement to the forum. The participants were engaged in activities stressing the importance of teamwork & problem solving using QI approach. Dr. Sonali Vaid(Senior Improvement Advisor, USAID Assist Project) &Dr.Anu Sachdeva (Assistant Professor, Department of Paediatrics) were the other resource faculty for the workshop.

Dr. Rajesh & Dr. Rachana, MD Residents from the Department of Emergency Medicine, AIIMS-Delhi shared their practical experience of carrying out QI projects in the ED. The nursing QI lead of AIIMS, Ms. Meena Joshi, Ms. Dolma Yangchen, Ms. Shakuntala, Mr. Shoukkath also presented their QI work as presentation and posters to sensitize National leaders into taking up quality improvement work in their respective institutions. Dr. Meera Ekka (Assistant Prof, Department of Emergency Medicine) briefed the participants about other available resources on QI.

Quality improvement in healthcare is the need of the hour to improve patient safety and bridge the gap between knowledge and implementation of standards of practice in healthcare.

By priming the leaders of Emergency Medicine, EMA India aims to disseminate the idea of Quality Improvement across India.
