VIZAG Ventures into UG Skills Workshop

Andhra Medical College under the aegis of Emergency Medicine Association organized a first ever full day Intercollegiate Undergraduate Emergency Medicine Workshop in Visakhapatnam.

EMA-Andhra Pradesh State Chapter lead under the leadership of Dr. S Prakash Babu organized this grand event.

The event began with the welcome speech and orientation of Emergency Medicine given by Dr. Ravi Teja Kethavath MD, DNB (EM).

Inaugurated by Dr. G. Buchi Raju, MD, DM (Neurology) Principal, Andhra Medical College Addl. DME, Andhra Pradesh, he said that “Medical educators are increasingly recognizing the importance of education about end-of-life care, and are calling for improvement in this area. There is evidence that deficits in end-of-life training and education have negative consequences for both patients and physicians”

Dr. Avinash Vegi, MD (EM) Head of the Dept, Emergency Medicine, KIMS ICON Hospital, Visakhapatnam, Dr. Divya Banna, MD (EM), FACEE (TOX) Asst Prof and In-charge, Dept of Emergency Medicine, GIMSR{DEEMED}, Visakhapatnam & Dr. Rajeev, MD (EM) Consultant Emergency Physician, Medicover Hospital, Kakinada actively participated in the activity.

The entire faculty actively engaged in the teaching process for the Hands on workshop. Educational Methods like panel discussion, group discussion and role play exercises were used to engage the students on an emotional level and set a reflective tone for the workshop on effective learning.

A student said “Small group format with focused faculty mentoring provided the opportunity to create a safe learning environment for such exercises. Faculty encouraged helping the students succeed in the exercise, through the use of feedback and coaching”.

Feedback from the students cited that the workshop enhanced their understanding and ability to address these skills with patients. Over 150 Students participated in this landmark academic event.
