The Department of Emergency Medicine, Sree Gokulam Medical College and Research Foundation on June 5, 2022 under the aegis of Emergency Medicine Association (EMA – Kerala State Chapter) organized an Undergraduate Emergency Medicine Quiz program called “GEM Quest 22”.
12 teams from five medical colleges participated. The Competition included 3 rounds namely MCQ round (20 questions), Image based round (15 questions) and Crossword puzzle (15 Questions). The organizing team put out an excellent effort in compiling clinically relevant emergency medicine questions for covering most topics in the field.
The welcome speech was delivered by Dr. Amrithanand V T (Assistant Professor, SGMC). Lamp lighting was done by dignitaries and Team GEM Quest.
The Quiz team rightly incorporated brief talk titled “EM talks”. The team invited pioneers in the field of Emergency Medicine to deliver the precise message among undergraduates.
The insightful talk on “Orientation to Emergency Medicine” was given by Dr. Linu S.M (Associate Professor & in-Charge, Dept. of Emergency Medicine, SGMC, Under Secretary, EMA Kerala State)
Dr. Mohammed Haneef (Senior Consultant & HOD, Emergency Medicine, SUT Hospital, Pattom, South Zone Secretary, EMA) explained prospects in the field vividly.
The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Nikhil Paul (Assistant Professor, SGMC).
Four teams advanced to the final round after using tie breaker questions.
The session included multiple innovative and brainstorming rounds. The resuscitation round included clinical scenarios, recent advances and image based questions which explored both theoretical and practical knowledge of final participants. The fun oriented Dumb Charades round was taken well by participants and audience.
Third round namely ‘Try your luck’ which included interesting clues to a diagnosis was rightly picked. Final session concluded with Rapid fire rounds with 10 short answer questions asked in 60s.
The Team from Sree Gokulam Medical College won GEM Quest 22.
The runner up team was from Travancore Medicity Medical college, Team from Believers Church Medical College took third spot.
The feedbacks aimed at scope for improvement were obtained with google forms. The prelims question and answer discussion were later done on online platform with active participation from participants.
