INDUSEM Leader and ACEE Star Researcher from JMMCRI Emergency Medicine Thrissur, Kerala Dr. Siju Abraham recently spoke at the 2022 World Stroke Congress opened in Singapore on 26th Oct.  Over 4200 delegates from 104 countries, participated in this global academic event.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, commented that stroke is a perfect example of the need for countries to make a paradigm shift towards promoting health and preventing disease by addressing its root causes. He followed by mentioning that, “The world needs your voices as advocates for preventing cardiovascular disease through healthier environments and reduced health inequities along with improving access to rehabilitation services.”

Prof Tan Chorh Chuan, Chief Health Scientist and Executive Director, Office of Healthcare Transformation, Ministry of Health, Singapore said in his opening remarks, “Stroke can be prevented and indeed the World Stroke Organization has a vision of life free from stroke. In fact, four out of five strokes are preventable through early diagnosis and treatment of the risk factors.”

Dr Anthony Rudd (UK), Dr Stephen Davis (Australia), co-chaired the World Stroke Organisation taskforce for prehospital Care (WSOTPC) presentation on Challenges and Future Directions for Pre-Hospital Stroke Care.

Dr. A. Rudd, began by noting that “The very fact that we are treating so few people proportionately with Thrombolysis and Thrombectomy is very largely down to the fact that we perhaps have not focussed enough on prehospital care and getting people to hospital quickly”. Stephen Davis (Australia) presented the Current Status and Barriers to Pre-Hospital Stroke Care in Metropolitan Regions and  Geoffrey Donnan (Australia) on the Developments in Lightweight Imaging and Digital Technology for Rural and Remote Locations. Dr Renyu Liu (USA) joined the event remotely with his talk on What Is New in the Prehospital Stroke Care?

Dr Siju V Abraham (India) spoke on Problems and Solutions Delivering Prehospital Stroke Care in India.

In low, middle and high income countries, WSOTPC  analyze the problems existing in the current pre-hospital care, develop audit standards for prehospital care and identify what the key measures that are needed to help with quality improvement and ultimately develop a document for standards of care for prehospital management.

The World Stroke Organization Taskforce for Prehospital care (WSOTPC), the Coalition of the Special Taskforces for Stroke (CSTS) and the Indian Emergency Medicine fraternity under the Academic College of Emergency Experts (ACEE) India and Emergency Medicine Association India (EMA India) work synchronously with overlapping objectives to improve stroke prehospital care in India.

“Siju is MCI Recognized Emergency Medicine Residency Trained, Board Certified MD in Emergency Medicine who has embraced Academic Emergency Medicine as a career.
