INDUSEM Leader Dr. Bhardwaj along with his mentors Benjamin S. Abella MD, MPhil (Director, Center for Resuscitation Science, Vice Chair of Research, Department of Emergency Medicine) and Marion Leary, MPH, MSN, RN (Director of Innovation Research at the Center for Resuscitation Science) recently published a paper in the Resuscitation journal titled “Factors associated with re-arrest following initial resuscitation from cardiac arrest”.
In this retrospective cohort study of adult patients who were successfully resuscitated after a cardiac arrest, the authors found that re-arrest is a common complication affecting as many as 24% of cardiac arrest patients that achieve ROSC. Re-arrest occurred early in the course of their post-arrest care (most re-arrest occurred within first 6 hours of ROSC). Re-arrest was also associated with a lower likelihood of survival to discharge. The study highlights the need for close hemodynamic monitoring in the post cardiac arrest phase along with management by a trained team specializing in resuscitation. Further studies in timely interventions such as early cardiac catheterization, use of anti-arrhythmic drugs and wearable cardioverter-defibrillator are indicated to find ways to improve survival after cardiac arrest.

Dr. Abhishek Bhardwaj went to medical school at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal and completed an Internal Medicine residency at Mercy Catholic Medical Center, Philadelphia. He is currently working in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He is simultaneously pursuing a Resuscitation fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Resuscitation Science.
Dr. Bhardwaj is extremely passionate about all aspects of critical care. His primary interests are in high quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR), cardiac arrest, post-cardiac arrest care and shock management. Dr. Bhardwaj has moderated various research sessions at international conferences around the world and is an avid clinical researcher.
Dr. Bhardwaj is leading efforts to work with Emergency physicians in India to forward the center for resuscitation science and improve survival of cardiac arrest patients and patients with severe sepsis and shock in India.
