Monitoring is a crucial part of the care of the critically ill patient in the Emergency Department(ED) as the physiological response to critical illness is linked strongly to outcome. The aim of monitoring patients is to detect organ dysfunction and guide the restoration and maintenance of tissue oxygen delivery. Thus it becomes imperative on the part of every Emergency Physician to imbibe the necessary skill.
Identifying the dire need of the situation, the Department of Emergency Medicine at JSS Medical College and Hospital, Mysuru, conducted EM Karnataka Annual Conference with the theme “Patient Monitoring in Emergency and Critical Care” on 3rd December 2017.
There was an overwhelming response not only from the Emergency Physicians but also from doctors of other specialties like Anesthesiology, General Medicine, General Surgery etc. Likewise the students pursuing allied health sciences like B.Sc in Emergency Technician, Cardiology, Anesthesia and Operation Theatre Technology alsomade their presence in the program. The main attraction of the program was the large number of delegates with a varied background striving exuberantly towards the same goal.
The program was inaugurated by Dr. Basavana Gowdappa H, Principal, JSS Medical College, Dr. Gurumurthy M, Medical Superintendent, JSS Hospital, Dr. Manjunath G V, Vice Principal, JSS Medical College, Dr. Jagannatha Babu, CME Observer, Karnataka Medical Council, Dr. Akkamahadevi P, Professor and Head, Dept. of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Rameshbabu Homanna Javali, Associate. Professor, Dept. of Emergency Medicine by lighting the lamp.Dr. Basavana Gowdappa H, Principal, JSS Medical College, addressed the gathering, pressing the need for such CMEs to update the knowledge in the untouched and grey areas of medicine.
Dr.Arun Kumar Ajjappa, Professor and Head, Dept. of Anesthesiology, Pain and Critical Care, SS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Davangere spoke about the importance of End-Tidal CO2 Monitoring in the emergency area with lucid examples. Following which Dr. Gurudatt CL, Professor and Head, Dept. of Anesthesiology, Pain and Critical Care, JSS Medical College, Mysuru, regarded as a great teacher by the entire medical fraternity all the country, held an interactive session on Arterial Blood gas analysis with exhilarating clinical cases for critical decision making. Dr. Dinesh Kumar U S, Associate Professor, Dept. of Cardiac Anesthesia, JSS Medical College, Mysuru, enlightened the gathering, the recent advances in both invasive and non-invasive cardiac output monitoring.
Dr. Murtuza Ghiya, from Dept. of Emergency Medicine, Bangalore, who opened up about his initial stressful experiences in the Emergency Room that tipped him to the point of burnout and how he overcame it. He also shared a few tips to cope up with the problems that an emergency physician faces in a day to day life.
Dr. Venkatesh HK, Vice President Indian Society of Neuroanaesthesiology and Critical Care, made it a point that the monitoring of the head injury patients is rather complicated and should be critically evaluated at regular intervals and appropriate intervened, for a positive outcome. Dr Hariprasad, Associate Professor in the Dept. of Emergency Medicine, M.S Ramaiah Medical College, Bangaloreintricately touched upon the various static and dynamic methods of monitoring fluid responsiveness in a patient presenting with shock to the ED.
The program ended with a panel discussion entailing a group of young and dynamic doctors from different specialties. The panel included emergency physicians, Dr.Harshit Mundra, Bangalore, Dr. Ganesha BS, Mysore, an anaesthetist, Dr. Anup NR, Mysore, a general physician, Dr.Venkatesh CR, Mysore, and a general surgeon Dr. Nithin KB, Myore. It was a case based discussion involving several questions and the take on each question by every member of the panel so as to bring out the holistic approach in the patient management.
The program was a grand success and was well received by all the delegates. The feedback was exhilarating.

About JSS Mysore
JSS Medical College, Mysuru, was started in 1984-85 and is imparting education in medical sciences (MBBS) course. It is recognized by the Medical Council of India and was affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka, Bangalore from 1995-1996.
