Govt. Medical College, Kozhikode has been running a strong academic training program (MD) in Emergency Medicine since 2012 and it is the only Government Medical College in Kerala to do so. The department has been actively involved in not only providing health care in the Emergency Department but they have been providing training in Basic Life Support and Trauma care to undergraduate students, post graduate students, hospital nursing staff and the District Traffic Police. The Department also conducts regular classes on Medical Emergencies for the nursing staff at government peripheral health care centers.
The department played a pivotal role in containing the Nipah outbreak in the Calicut District with the Head of the Emergency Department, Dr. Chandni. R designated as the Nodal Officer. The Department of Emergency Medicine at Govt. Medical College, Kozhikode was honored by the Govt. of Kerala and the Emergency Medicine Association (EMA) for their outstanding and selfless work during the Nipah outbreak. The department also played a key role in organizing medical camps during the floods that affected the entire state of Kerala.
The Department of Emergency Medicine has been relentlessly working to improve the emergency care in the Hospital as well as in the District under the strong leadership of the Head of the Department, Dr Chandni. R; under the guidance and the support of the Principal of the College, Dr V.R Rajendran, the Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr. Sajith Kumar, the Casuality Superintendent Dr Ravi Kumar and the Heads of other Departments.

Recently they conducted a training program called “Basics in Emergency Care” which included basic life support and infection control practices in the Emergency department for the entire staff working in the Emergency Medicine over 3 days.
On December 18th& 19th, 2018 the Department of Emergency Medicine in association with the Department of Surgery and the Department of Orthopedics conducted their Second Annual Simulation based training program on trauma called “TRAUMA RESUS 2.0” which turned out to be a high quality training program on trauma.
With the new state of the art Emergency Department block due to be of service in another six months time the Department of Emergency Medicine is striving to increase the faculty strength, the number of post graduates in the department and to provide training in emergency care to all the staff with the help of ACEE-EMA to ensure high quality care to all the patients seen in the Emergency Department.
