The first Bioethics Unit of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics in the state of Rajasthan was formally inaugurated and established at Mahatma Gandhi University of Medical Sciences and Technology (MGUMST), Jaipur, thanks to the vision and dynamic leadership of the MGUMST Chairman, Professor. Dr. M.L. Swarankar.
The unit was inaugurated by the Head and Chair, Asia Pacific Bioethics Program of UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, Prof. Russell D’Souza, on 3rd December 2015.
The event was graced by the presence of Prof. Hari Gautam, former Chairman UGC and Principal Advisor to MGUMST, Dr.Sudhir Sachdev, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dr. G. N. Saxena, Dean of the Medical College.
This MGUMST-UNESCOBioethics Unit will conduct workshops under the National 3T Bioethics Training Program for faculty, take up inter-disciplinary research projects related to various issues in Bioethics and moreover will involve undergraduate students in its activities. It will partner with other UNESCOBioethics Units across Universities in India.
INDUSEM Leader Professor Dr.Siddharth Dubhashi, Director of Academics and Student Affairs and Professor of Surgery, was appointed as Head of the Mahatma Gandhi University of Medical Sciences and Technology (MGUMST), Jaipur-Bioethics Unit of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics.

On July 2009, UNESCO signed an agreement to establish a UNESCO Chair in Bioethics and Human Rights with the UniversitàEuropea di Roma and AteneoPontificio Regina Apostolorum. The two universities, in cooperation with UNESCO, established this UNESCO Chair at the Bioethics and Human Rights Institute.
