INDUSEM-EMA Leader leads International Disaster Congress

EMA Leader Dr. Ajith V. of the Department of Emergency Medicine of M.O.S.C Medical College Hospital along with the MOSC College of Nursing in collaboration with Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) organized The International Conference on Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management from 4th to 6th of January, 2017.

The goal of this conference was to provide a broad overview of the disaster preparedness from multiple perspectives- at international, national and local levels. Faculty from various disciplines shared a vast variety of information during the conference. Speakers included a large number of experts both international and national – in the fields of medicine, nursing, public health, nuclear physics, geology, social work and several others.

Dr. D.N. Sharma, Member, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Government of India inaugurated the Congress on 4th of January, 2017.

Shri. Babu, Deputy Collector (Disaster Management), Ernakulam was the guest of Honor.

Dr. Sekhar L. Kuriakose, Member Secretary, Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) delivered the key note address.

The inaugural meeting was also attended by Dr. Muzaffar Ahmad, Member, Medical Council of India, Dr. Valsamma Joseph, Dean, Faculty of Nursing, KUHS, Shri Joy P. Jacob, Secretary, MOSC Medical Mission Hospital and Prof. Dr. Sheela Shenai N.A., Principal, MOSC College of Nursing.

A striking feature of this conference was that members of different disciplines from different countries seemed very comfortable in exchanging their knowledge of wisdom.

Another fact which is to be highlighted is the fact that top experts in the area of disaster preparedness came together under one roof.

Dr. Sekhar L Kuriakose, Member Secretary, KSDMA and Sri Babu, Deputy Collector and In charge District Disaster Management Authority , Prof. Josefina A Tuazon, Asia Pacific Emergency and Disaster Nursing Network (APEDNN) and also eminent Faculty from various medical and nursing colleges attended this first of its kind conference in Kerala.

The conference attracted 300 plus delegated from all over India including reputed institutions like AIIMS, New Delhi, CMC Vellore and other government and private institutions.

Conference also witnessed innumerable and innovative oral presentation and poster presentation by the delegates.

Various talks given by the eminent faculty are as follows:-

  • Dr. DN Sharma talked about crisis communication during disaster and about radiation safety in his next session
  • Dr. Muzaffar Ahmad delivered various lectures on – Hospital Preparedness during disaster, mass casualty control, chemical disasters and hospital safety during disasters.
  • Dr. Josefina A Tuazon from University of Philippines also representing APEDNN, WHO provided us with insight into APEDNN & why it was important.
  • Dr. Diana Behling who is an Obstetric specialist nurse who coordinated maternity services in over 10 different hospitals in Virginia discussed about Obstetric and gynecological emergencies during disaster
  • Dr. Sreekrishnan T.P (Asst. Professor, Emergency Medicine, AIMS, Kochi), talked about logistic support during disaster.
  • Dr. Sachin Menon (Associate Professor, Internal Medicine, SNIMS, Paravur), talked about disaster paradigm & training need assessment of medical sector in Kerala.
  • Dr. Ajith V. gave an overview on trauma management during disaster.
  • Dr. Gireesh Kumar K.P (Professor and head, Emergency Medicine, AIMS, Kochi). gave a lecture on burns management during disaster.
  • Dr. MC Mathew, (Head, Developmental Pediatrics, MOSC MCH, Kolenchery, Kerala) talked about disaster-ethics and rehabilitation
  • Dr. Babu Palatty (Professor and head, Emergency Medicine, JMMC, Thrissur) delivered a lecture on role of hospital during a disaster.
  • Dr. Abraham Paulose, (Asso. Professor, Pediatrics MOSC MCH, Kolenchery, Kerala) delivered about Pediatric emergencies during disaster.
  • Dr.RemyaSudevan talked about the most crucial post disaster threat-epidemics during disaster.
  • Mr. Joe John George (State Project officer, GOI-UNDP project, SEOC) shared about disaster preparedness among persons with disability.
  • Dr. Sandeesh P.T. (Clinical psychologist, District Mental Health Centre, Calicut, Kerala) talked about psychosocial issues in emergencies.
  • Lt.Cdr. Mithun Aravind (CEO, Alpha Team Adventures, Palarivattom, Ernakulam) gave a wide picture of rescue operations.

A disaster mock drill on mass casualty situation due to ammonia leak was simulated live for the delegates. Hundreds of student and community volunteers participated in  this disaster and rescue drill. This was one of a kind experience that we were able to provide our delegates.
