The Emergency Medicine Association (EMA) has attained yet another milestone by consecutively guiding the training initiative for Junior Red Cross for the second consecutive year. The training initiative which was headed by EMA Leaders Dr Vimal Krishnan and Dr Siju V Abraham encompassed over thousand Junior Red Cross volunteers and around 250 councilors over a period of 2 days in the third week of July. The overwhelming response from volunteers for the program which happened in July 2015 prompted the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) administration to invite EMA Leaders to a bigger initiative this year.

This year NATPAC under the dynamic Director Dr B.G Sreedevi had the visionary plan of instilling the young Red Cross volunteers with not just Road Safety education but also initiate a culture which provokes the young mind to be a stakeholder in building a better tomorrow.

The ‘conventional first aid classes which are now used only by non accredited Emergency organizations were discarded and thought provoking discussions and simulation based thinking were used for the workshop’ as quoted by Dr Vimal Krishnan, Principal Secretary EMA.

EMA are torch bearers of the INDO-US Emergency and Trauma Collaborative (INDUSEM) under the Leadership of Dr. Sagar Galwankar, which over the past decade has being instrumental in nurturing academic Emergency Medicine and promoting the Emergency Healthcare Sector  in India. Staying true to its mission of ‘advancing medicine by education, research and quality healthcare’, INDUSEM has worked in the grassroot investing in the future and joining hands with all stakeholders for the system building in India.

The enormously successful workshop which was conducted in Thrissur in a jam-packed Town Hall was well received not only by the young Red Cross Cadets but also by their councilors who represented Junior Red Cross from various Schools in Kerala. The organizing team consisting of Retd Kerala Police SP Shri T.V Satheesh (Consultant NATPAC) was instrumental in vouching for EMA Leaders to give life to the training initiative.

Investing in children holds the key to better road culture opined Dr Siju V Abraham, Executive Member EMA.  Mr Subin B, Senior Scientist, NATPAC stressed that EMA should work in tandem with NATPAC not only in training but also in research and development on multi-modal systems of transportation, which is currently under the purview of NATPAC . The 2 day workshop ended with Kerala State government officials thanking NATPAC and EMA Leaders for this endeavor.
