Chauhan Charts India’s Tele-ECG Research at American College of Cardiology

INDUSEM Awardee and Academic Leader Dr. Vivek Chauhan from Dr. RPG Medical College, Tanda, Himachal Pradesh presented his landmark Research on Tele-ECG at the 65th Annual Scientific Sessions of the American College of Cardiology at Chicago.

Vivek had discovered that Physicians from Rural Villages had difficulty in interpreting ECG. This led to a lot of under and over diagnosis.  Vivek wrote up a research project and successfully got it funded by the Government of India. He developed an IT Based Gateway using WhatsApp to transmit ECG Images to specialist at Tertiary Institutes. Using a Cluster Controlled Clinical Process Based Intervention Trial Model two groups were compared. One group was the Hospitals with Specialty Services in Medicine (MD) and the other group was Community Health Centers (CHCs) which had only Primary Medical Care Services (MBBS). The Physicians in CHCs were trained through a 24-hour Toll free central helpline supported by the consultants in the Medical College Tanda, HP.

The CHCs provided emergency cardiac treatment within 81 Minutes, which included ECG Acquisition, ECG Transmission, Specialty Consultation, Treatment and Patient Disposition.

The abstract of this path breaking innovative study has been published in the Journal of the America College of Cardiology.

Dr. Vivek Commented “The doctors in the CHCs of Kangra District participated very actively in this project and played a crucial role in management of acute Coronary Syndromes in peripheral remote hospitals. Over one year they became so skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of ACS that they were able to provide correct treatment even before the ECG was reported. Confidentiality was maintained in the study and the patients were transported in ambulances with a trained paramedic. This model is a very low cost intervention and there are at least 2 lakh medical practitioners in India who need hand-holding for ECG diagnosis. There exists virtually no such long distance service where an ECG can be sent and diagnosis is received within 5 minutes along with a call from a consultant if the ECG shows an acute MI.”

“Writing a research proposal, getting it funded, conducting the study, writing a paper, presenting the paper at an Internationally Renowned Sub Specialty Meeting in USA are accomplishments which validate the Academic Faculty Development Efforts by INDUSEM. I am proud that Vivek is an INDUSEM Discovery and we at INDUSEM hope to see more of his High Quality Research Work in Emergency Cardiology. I am proud of him and God Bless Him and his Family. Congratulations to his Research Team” Said INDUSEM CEO Dr. Sagar Galwankar
